Jeffreys bay backpackers accommodation, jbay backpackers, budget accommodation bJeffreys Bay is by definition, South Africa's surf capital, and thanks to our unique weather, we can literally boast awesome waves all-year-round! From the obvious - being the home of the annual ASP Billabong Pro Series venue, to Holllywood gracing our shores in search of the 'perfect wave' while filming the iconic surf movie, Endless Summer, J-Bay always lives up to it's promise of awesome surfing! For the beginners, there's Kitchen Windows, Dolphin Beach, as well as Main Beach. With waves on average being between 2 - 4 foot high, it's the perfect spot to start practising on our well-known right-hand breaks... and even when the waves are practically non-existent, it's just the most amazing feeling just chilling on your board waiting for the next set of waves to hopefully come your way.

For the more adventurous, there's Boneyards, Magnatubes and Point Beach - each with their own distinctive and individual quirks... and for the more experienced surfer there's Supertubes - our most famous break! Unless you're really sure of yourself our there in the water, these waves are the one's  to set yourself as goals some time in the future... after you've had some more practice! In the meantime though, there's no need to stay away from Supertubes... it's the most fantastic spot to just chill and watch other surfers rip their stuff, and come July (the middle of winter on our side of the world), it's the most radical place to pick up tips and inspiration while watching world class Pro surfers doing what they do best during the Billabong Pro!!!

If you've never tried to surf before - this is absolutely the one place in the world you have to take your first surf lesson! Whether you manage to stand during your first lesson, or not... you'll be hooked forever after!

Wavecrest Surf SchoolHard Rock Backpackers is affiliated with Wavecrest Surf School. Andrew Moon, it's owner and it's qualified, experienced surf instructor, has been doing his thing since 2005 and offers group classes, as well as private classes.

Wavecrest Surf School also offers Surf Academy's which span the duration of a week. It's an incredible opportunity to learn from the man, learn all about our town, as well as meeting all of his board shaping buddies, and have unlimited use of his equipment during the week for the same price as it would've cost you to pay for 7 individual one-hour lessons. Andrew is also the perfect person to have on your side if you're considering purchasing new surf equipment!

The Jeffreys Bay Surf Break

Supertubes in Jeffreys Bay, South Africa.A very long, fast, tubing right hand point break breaks along the west side of the bay. The break is regarded as one of the best right hand point breaks in the entire world, in both consistency and quality, in season. It has been divided up into several sections, including, from the top of the point, Kitchen Windows, Magna tubes, Boneyards, Supertubes, Impossibles, Tubes, the Point, and Albatross. "Supertubes", which itself breaks for about 300m or more, is regarded as the best part of the wave. On rare occasions (large wave sizes, wide-breaking waves, and even swells), Boneyards can link up all the way to the Point for a ride over one kilometer long. Optimal size is considered to be from about 4 to 10 feet (Hawaiian scale), or about 8 to 20 feet wave faces. The most consistent waves occur between about May to mid September, also often coinciding with offshore winds, although good waves can occasionally occur at other times of the year.
